Perhaps prompted by Hitler’s enquiries, Messerschmitt began studying a series of further developments of the basic Me 262 design with improved range and load carrying capacity. The results of the studies, which were conducted during July and August 1943 were issued in a report on September 1943. This report included a new fighter-bomber ( Jabo), three fast bombers ( Schnellbomber I, Ia and II ), three reconnaissance aircraft ( Aufklärer I, Ia and II), three interceptors ( Interzeptor I, II and III and a trainer ( Schulflugzeug). Schnellbomber Ia : ( High-speed bomber version) In this M 262 project the pilot’s cockpit was moved forward to the nose of the aircraft, and three additional fuel tanks were provided. Two of them in the centre of fuselage, carrying 700 and 500 lts. of fuel and a third tank in the rear section containing 1000 lts. No defensive armament was to be carried, but this version could be loaded with two BT 400 aerial torpedoes. Aufklärer Ia: Similar appearance to the Schnellbomber Ia, the project had the cockpit moved forward and two additional fuel tanks in the centre of the fuselage. Two Rb 75/30 cameras were installed in the rear fuselage.
