In early 1941 several High Speed versions of the Me 262 were created at the drawing boards. The first of the HG projects (HG=Hochgeschwindigkeit, or high speed), was the "Pfeilflugel", or Flying Arrow Wing, best known by HG I. This aircraft featured swept angles of the stabilizers, the "rennkabine", or racing canopy, (with low profile) and modified wing leading edges. Other two projects were created following this way: the HG II called for an outboard wing of increased chord and an improved engine installation, and finally the HG III, which was the final stage of the development. It required more radical modifications, as a new 45° swept wing with engines housed in the wing roots. Two variants of the HG III are known which correspond to the original layout. The Entwurf II has a V-tail, and the Entwurf III. This last is considerably altered in the fuselage area, where cockpit is relocated at the rear and forms a part of the empennage group. The swept back stabilizers were located behind the cockpit. The HG III Entwurf III attained the highest state of fighter technology, which in the post-war period was only to be realized abroad after a passage of several years.
